Swami Vivekananda's Samadhi Mandira, Belur Math
Swamiji's temple at Belur Math

Our fledgling deemed university, Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (acronym: RKMVERI), started under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission is just completing one year. The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, declared the Institute as a ‘deemed-to-be-university’ by an official Notification (later published in the Gazette) dated 5 January 2005. The formal inauguration of the university took place on 4 July 2005, the sacred day of mahasamadhi (passing away) of Swami Vivekananda. During this brief period of one year (July 2005 to June 2006), we have been able to achieve much, project much more, dream and envision a lot more. The present book titled RKMVERI Year Book 2005-06 tells the story so far of our fledgling university: Swami Vivekananda’s vision about a university at Belur, the initial struggles, the concept — unique and fundamental to the Ramakrishna Mission ideology — the thrust areas, the achievements made so far and the vision for the future. The animating spirit behind the university has been, is and will be Swami Vivekananda and the manifesto of the university is his immortal educational vision, his vision of imparting man-making, character building education to the youth of our country. His memorable and powerful words quoted in the following pages and repeated reverentially by every person associated with any of the Ramakrishna Mission’s educational endeavour, need to be seriously implemented by all those who feel strongly about rebuilding a glorious India. Swami Vivekananda said that it is by the right type of education alone that India could be restored to her past glory and enthroned once again as the queen of infinite wisdom, infinite prowess, infinite love and infinite benediction. May the following powerful exhortation of Swami Vivekananda ring constantly in our ears:

“Let us all work hard, my brethren; this is no time for sleep. On our work depends the coming of the India of the future. She is there ready waiting. She is only sleeping. Arise and awake and see her seated here on her eternal throne, rejuvenated, more glorious than she ever was -- this motherland of ours.”
